Sedgwick and Burneside meet with the sides sharing second place

Sedgwick host Burneside with the sides tied in second place, ten points behind leaders Sedgwick. Only 14 points separate sixth place from the bottom side so the Carnforth 2nds v Holme and the Morecambe 2nds v Arnside games will start to shape who is midtable respectability and who is in the lower reaches of the division.

Sedgwick’s perfect start to the season came to an end when they were beaten by 2 wickets by bottom side Bare on Saturday. Jake Allison (4/27) led the Bare attack as only Richard Hanson (37 not out) batted with confidence enabling them to finish on 123. Frank Smith (28) showed all his skill in resisting the Sedgwick bowlers after Jonny Matthews (3/35) had made early inroads. He found support from Robert White (30) and it took Craig Albon (22 not out) to spark wide celebrations as Bare won in the 47th over. Heysham have taken over at the summit following their 136 run win at Holme. Phil Bovis (89 not out) dominated the innings, and contributions from Shaun Wyse (27) and Sam Calverley (37) pushed the total to 210/5. Holme had no answer against Sam Calverley (7/32) as only an impish 29 from Neil Moysey frustrated the bowlers before Holme were all out for 74.

Burneside had their second successive one wicket win. Joe Cunliffe (48) and Joe Oliver (27) were the main men in Shireshead’s 156/8, Oscar Coxon taking 3/31 and Etan Ellwood 3/27. Ellwood made 45, but when Jack Cunnington (2/24) and Dave Jack (4/46) removed the dangerous middle order, it needed Jack Thwaites (37) to keep them in contention. When he fell to the returning Jack, pressure mounted and for the second week Chris Dixon scampered the winning runs. Steve Williams (50) and James Royce (50) added 83 for Kirkby Lonsdale as they recovered from a Graham Kellett (3/34) 7/3. Harry Tugman took 3/41 as the later batters couldn’t fully build on the foundations set, and Kirkby were restricted to 154. The second innings of the game was the Graham Kellett show as the all-rounder made a well-constructed 80 not out striking 11 fours and a six, enjoying an unbroken partnership of 83 with Tom Barnfield (40 not out).

In a game that swung one way and then the other, Morecambe 2nds beat Kendal 2nds by 3 wickets. Oli Killiner (81) and Terry Hunte (20) were in control at 116/2 but George Oyston (6/50) precipitated a collapse to 147. After tea, Kendal quickly regained the whip hand as Morecambe slumped to 20/5 against Marcus Hill (3/42) and Andy Dugdale (3/29) only for Morecambe captain James Lambert to turn the game on its head. Lambert made 86 not out from 86 balls (11 fours, 1 six) as Morecambe achieved an unlikely win. Sam Woodburn (67) and Lee Hodkinson (37) powered Carnforth 2nds to 230 all out at Arnside, Rob Shepherd taking 3/44. With skipper Adam Richardson incapacitated by a damaged thumb, Arnside could only make 107 in reply.

Westgate 2nds are top of Division 2. They scored 200/4 at Heysham, with Dave Hannigan scoring 96 and son Matt chipped in with 39. Heysham 2nds could only make 116 in reply, with Marcus Palamountain taking 4/11. Previous leaders Silverdale were limited to 145 at Shireshead. Jon Mason made 49, but none of the batters had an answer to Ben Brown who took 4/8. Rick Hamblett (46) got Shireshead off to a canter and they won by 4 wickets with 15 overs to spare. Bob Davies (88 not out) maintained his rich seam of form for Cartmel, carrying his bat in their 171. Mike Burton took 3/38 for Coniston, and Robert Warne 3/43. Only Andrew Warne (44) made any inroad into the target as Joe Cowperthwaite (4/37) and David Unsworth (5/12) celebrating his first appearance of the season, his 40th at the club, as Coniston were dismissed for 94.

Mark Routledge (43) and Barry Smith (35) made runs in Morecambe 3rds 133/6 at Milnthorpe who gained a comfortable 7 wicket win with Mike Wills (38 not out) and Scott Singleton (45 not out) sharing an unbeaten stand of 93. Richard Haddath (26) top scored for Sedgwick 2nds as Barney Wileman (3/20) restricted them to 111/8. After Hugh Tyson (22) and Rick Smith (24) took Ambleside to 48/1 they lost their last 9 wickets for 48 with Dan Lawson taking 3/7 as Sedgwick won by 15 runs. Sedbergh School 2nds scored 220/6 with fifties for Tom Newman (55), Henry Jones Perrot (57) and harry Bellamy (71 not out). Vaughan Sampson took 3/47 for Netherfield 3rds who replied with 203/6 with Paul Salmon (51), Sampson (32) and Caleb Wilson (59 not out) all enjoying the excellent surface.

Holme 2nds Matty Wright (3/47) reduced Windermere to 10/3 but from there the home side dominated. Will Aspinwall scored 122 not out from 111 balls (12 fours, 6 sixes) and captain Dan Sykes 105 not out from 97 balls (13 fours, 3 sixes) as the Windermere pair added an unbroken 235, declaring on 245/3 from 38 overs. Shellshocked Holme slipped to 8/8 in reply before Ryan Teasdale (39 not out) and Tom Keast (26) took the total to 76 all out. Sykes took 4/25 and George Vinall weighed in with 4/4. Leaders Carnforth 3rds are only 3 points ahead of Ingleton who had the better of a draw between the sides. Josh Capstick (76), Huw Shape (65) and Matthew France (37) propelled the home side to 276/8, Gary Baxendale taking 3/52 for Carnforth. Wayne Tomlinson (41), Kieran Saunders (30) and Lindsay Thompson (41) gave Carnforth a good start, but a burst of wickets from Matthew Dawson (5/35) left the last pair hanging on for a draw at 163/9.

John Carter (39) and John Hughes (77) were in the runs as Bolton le Sands compiled 182/7. Paul Thompson (68 not out), Mark Huddelston (61) and Mark Baldwin (40 not out) took Trimpell to a 9 wicket win. Mark Ward (24) and Mike Allen (23) provided some resistance as Kyle Hands took 5/27 for Leven Valley to bowl out Burneside 2nds for 94. George Needham (44) and Hinds (30) completed a 7 wicket win. Dan Smith (102) joined the centurions club. Opening the batting with Eddie Hart (44) for Arnside 2nds the powerful left-hander made a career best as Arnside chased down 172 to win by 8 wickets. Earlier James Alker had scored 42 for Silverdale 2nds and Jack Belcher scored 70, while Chris Myers took 3/20 for Arnside. Danny Brighouse (3/14) restricted Bare 2nds to 126, Gareth Westworth (32) top scoring. After their batting nightmare of a week ago, Galgate were relieved to win by 8 wickets.

In Division 4, Ross Swidenbank (4/20) and Steve Watson (4/12) bowled out Ingleton 2nds for 44 which with Paul Hodgson making an unbeaten 34 Kendal were able to pass for the loss of 1 wicket. Burneside 3rds (142) beat Netherfield 4ths (127) by 15 runs while Dave Noonan (59) underpinned Ulverston 3rds 185/7 against Appleby Eden 3rds who could only make 96 in reply. Partha Singh took 4/10 for Ulverston, whilst Jack Wilson took 3/30 for Appleby Eden. Sedbergh School 3rds scored a mammoth 293 against Heysham 3rds who scored 76 in reply. Thom Shaw (76) and Oliver Henderson (60) led the way for the School, whilst Dave Whittaker (4/55) and Alfie Barnes (3/33) picked up wickets, but their batters had an off day, Alister Paul not helping with 3/2. There was a nail-biting draw at Milnthorpe where Westgate 3rds scored 134/7, Sunil Naikwadi making 55 whilst Elliott Riley (3/26) and Tom Brook (3/11) bowled well for the home club. Andy Harmer (28) Will Garnett (25) and Bob Baldwin (25) all contributed to the reply which finished agonisingly one run short with the last pair at the wicket. Charlie Higson took 3/24 for Westgate. John Bleasdale (44), David Sloan (51) and Steve Foy (73) took Shireshead 3rds to 213/5 and an 129 run victory over Morecambe 4ths with Rowen Yates taking 3/23.
