It used to be said that bowlers had to beware of an injured Gordon Greenidge because the great West Indian batsman took an even heavier toll than normal when limping.

The schoolboys of Sedbergh came across the same phenomenon on Saturday when the Arnside captain Adam Richardson, barely able to walk, plundered 110 not out against the school attack.

Arnside were struggling at 48/5 when Richardson joined Nobby Lee at the crease. The pair added 131 for the 6th wicket, Lee scoring 43 whilst Richardson plundered 18 fours and three sixes as 90 of his runs came in boundaries.

Tom Newman (44) and Matthew Harrison (54 not out) kept the school in the hunt, but 4/46 from Chris Howsley and 3/33 from Jim Crawford delivered a 55-run win for the home team.

Heysham started the season with a seven-wicket win at home to Burneside, who were missing three of their top four which was evident as they slumped to 37/5 against Sam Calverley (3/19) and Jamie Cassidy (3/44) despite an elegant 25 from Simon Huck.

Steve Cooper (34) and Ben Leacock (20) rallied but 116 didn’t appear enough. Nathan Chambers (1/16) removed Lewis Plackett in the first over of the reply, but Lee Calverley (34), Geoff Carter (23), Damion Keegan (25 not out) and Sam Calverley (27 not out) completed the win.

Kirkby Lonsdale’s return to Division 1 started with Shireshead’s openers Tom Jacques (64) and Joe Cunliffe (67 not out) adding 102 for the first wicket at Lunefield Park.

Rob Jacques made 21 as Shireshead finished on 203/5, Dan Teasdale the pick of the bowlers with 2/34. James Royce made 65, but Dave Jack (5/18) cut through the rest of the batting, and with Tom Jacques taking 3/17 Shireshead gained a comfortable 95 run win.

Bare’s Craig Albon (3/25) removed Sedgwick’s top order, but Ali Howell (42), Lee Tattersall (32) and Chris Evans (57 not out) led the recovery and the visitors declared on 190/8. Frank Smith (24) dug in, but when he departed there was a flurry of wickets with Tattersall claiming 6/20 as Bare were dismissed for 109.

David Batty (71) and Oliver Yarker (71) enabled Kendal 2nd XI in their first WCL game in more than 70 years to post 194/4 at Trimpell who could only make 91 in reply.

Mike Bland top scored with 32, but the batters had little answer to New Zealander, Thomas Suker who debuted with 6/33.

Phil Bovis (52) and Mike Wills (57 not out) batted well for Milnthorpe, but 65 from Stuart Mayor for Warton, supported by Jack Bolton (22) and Tom Barnfield (32 not out) opened the season with a win.

Cartmel’s Tony Hadwin had forgotten his new flannels so opened the batting in shorts at Ambleside. He lasted 93 balls for 15, setting the platform for Will Anderson to make 94 from 93 balls and Joe Cowperthwaite to plunder 71 from 40 balls as Cartmel made 222/7, Barny Wileman taking 3/36.

Ambleside lost wickets regularly, but Wileman (19 not out) batted out for a draw as Ambleside finished on 119/8.

Mike Burton (101 not out) and Bob Simpson (48) powered Coniston to 222/8 against Windermere for whom Denzil Harrison took 4/56.

Only Lewis Rands-Trevor (26) made double figures as Windermere were all out for 42, Sam Eccles taking 4/12.

Relegated Silverdale restricted Holme to 129, but five wickets for left-armer Simon Shipperd undid their reply as the visitors collapsed to 38 all out. Kieran Hunter weighed in with three wickets.

There was drama at Ingleton as the home team prevailed over Sedgwick 2nds by two runs. Graham Kellett (30) and Chris Fleming (23) were the main Ingleton scorers - Cam Hankey taking 4/12.

With Josh Capstick (4/36) and Kellett (3/23) taking wickets regularly, an easy win seemed in prospect, but number 10, Adam Kershaw (28) had other ideas and was so close to snatching victory when he was bowled by Owen Dryden (2/17).

Late order heroics also came to nought at Shireshead. Carnforth 2nds had slumped to 82/9 at Shireshead, with the promising Aiden Weir taking 4/40. Last pair Stan Rich (47 not out) and Zach Dodds (28 not out) added 72.

154/9 proved not enough as Liam Burns (46) and Paul Yates (27) provided the foundation for a four-wicket win.

On August 14th last year, Joe Bradshaw announced himself as a player to watch with a maiden hundred. Just four innings later the teenager did it again with a remarkable 127 from 98 balls against Netherfield 3rds as Westgate 2nds scored 195.

Vaughan Samson took 4/38 and James Longley 3/71 for Netherfield, who could only muster 73 in reply as Sharjito Islam (3/27) and Ryan McMenamin (4/25) made the early inroads before Dylan Conroy, returning from injury, finished things off with 3/5.

In Division 3, Matty Wright’s unbeaten 57 helped Holme 2nds to 158/9 with Lee Pidgeon taking 4/19 and Chris Myers 3/43. Arnside replied with 131, Michael Collins making 42. Ethan Burton took 3/32 and Wright 3/37 as Holme won by 27 runs.

Rob Pearcy (28) and Lee Potter (29) gave Carnforth 3rds a good start, but both were run out and the innings subsided to 160 all out, Chris Crawford taking 4/20. Paul Wilcock (43) and James Cale (51) were the main contributors as Leven Valley won by four wickets.

Veterans Bob Baldwin (5/17) and Andy Thomas (4/3) skittled Kendal 3rds for 47 before Steve Bowman (22 not out) and Gavin Kellett (19 not out) completed a 10-wicket win.

Oli Battersby made a brilliant 124 not out for Morecambe 3rds at Bolton le Sands. With Kevin Demain making 40, the visitors posted an imposing 222/5 declared. Mark Brickles (26), John Carter (45) and Jack Brown (36) showed resolve and the last pair batted out for a draw on 151/9.

Danny Brighouse (43), Chris Beales (39) and Rob Speak (68 not out) batted well as Galgate scored 195/7, with Harry Wallbank taking 3/39 and Chris Boniface 3/47 for Heysham 2nds.

With Andy Hill making 67 Heysham were favourites, but Speak’s 3/36 and 2/21 from Partha Singh meant that they ended up with a draw on 175/9.

Gary Entwistle (42) and Tom Glenister (72) were in-form for Silverdale 2nds who scored 168/4, Ian Semple taking 3/26.

Trimpell 2nds won with nine balls to spare thanks to an outstanding 81 not out from Mark Huddleston and 58 from Joe Sumsion.

Father and son, Jonty (50) and Stan (46 not out) Collinson were the main men for Shireshead 3rds who scored 145/9 against Morecambe 4ths - Dineshmanickam Annadurai taking 5/22.

Stan then took 3/21 and Conor Passenger’s 4/32 had Morecambe in trouble, but last pair Archie Graves (18 not out) and Ethan Packard (24 not out) held out valiantly for the draw as Morecambe totalled 127/9.

Steve Wilson made 35 not out for Netherfield 4ths as Liam Burrow (3/9) and Matthew Lee (3/22) restricted the home side to 123/9. A hard hitting 58 from Burrow and 33 not out from Gareth Westworth and Bare 2nds won by six wickets.

Niall Parkinson (58) and Andrew Metcalfe (45) enabled Kirkby Lonsdale 2nds to score 194/8 despite Julian Cann taking 5/36 for Sedbergh School 3rds.

Dan Teasdale (5/23) demolished the home team as they fell 104 runs short.

Sedgwick 3rds beat Ulverston 3rds by 105 runs.

Sedbergh School 3rds played two games over the weekend and ran out winners by eight wickets on Saturday against Westgate 3rds, whose 126 relied on 35 from Peter Wilson supported by Dave Edwards (27 not out). Oliver Sayer took 4/25 for Sedbergh and Xander Hodgins 3/13. Oliver Fidler (34 not out) and Sebastian Waiter-Westgarth (32 not out) took Sedbergh to victory.

In the National Village Knockout, Shireshead beat Great Eccleston of the Palace Shield Premier Division by four wickets with four balls to spare. Great Eccleston made 188 with Joe Cunliffe taking 4/50. Shireshead were wobbling at 10/3 but Ernie Collinson made a fine 70 and a powerful 60 not out from Dave Jack took Shireshead to victory.
