Week 15 Roundup

Shireshead & Forton are the 2022 British Rose Cricket champions. Their second team defeated Holme at Milnthorpe on Sunday in the final. Holme’s much vaunted batting lineup had no answer to Shireshead’s bowling attack. Captain Mike Mead and Ben Brown made the early incisions, but it was Paul Yates who inflicted maximum damage with a spell of 4/9. Paul Duckett (18 not out) battled to try to post a score, but 57 all out didn’t look defendable and wasn’t. Rick Hamblett (41 not out), who has a Bolton League winner’s medal from his time at Farnworth Social Circle, and Ben Brown (13 not out) took Shireshead to the Trophy without losing a wicket. Earlier Shireshead had beaten Ambleside by 7 wickets on a reduced Duckworth Lewis target with Hamblett making another 41 not out and receiving support from big hitting Ste Yetes. Holme had beaten Sedgwick 2nds after Kieran Hunter and Lee Barnes (both 2/14) had restricted Sedgwick 2nds to 80. Brendan Herron got them off to a positive start, but they wobbled and it needed important runs from Duckett to secure a 3 wicket win.

Heysham increased their lead in Division 1 to 15 points when they beat Milnthorpe by 9 wickets in a game reduced to 29 overs a side. Phil Bovis (43) and Mike Wills (40 not out) led Milnthorpe to 109/3. Heysham openers Lewis Plackett (30 not out) and Lee Calverley (28) began carefully, but when Calverley fell to Wills (1/25), Sam Calverley finished the game with aplomb smashing 4 sixes and 2 fours in a 19 ball 42 not out. Westgate lost ground when their game at Burneside was rained off as was the game between Arnside and Warton. 31 not out from Koby Cheeseman guided Bare to 146/8, Thomas Shuker taking 3/12 for Kendal 2nds whose batting was shackled by accurate bowling as Architect Bhardwaj (2/18) and Robbie White (1/17) conceded less than two an over. Shane Hyland made 29 but he and Shuker (25 not out) couldn’t deliver the win and Kendal finished on 116/5.Ben Ferguson (19) was the only batter in double figures as Tom Ridley (3/8) and Rich Hanson (3/21) ran through Kirkby Lonsdale for 47, which Sedgwick passed for the loss of 1 wicket.

Second Division leaders Holme were frustrated by the weather at Windermere and Shireshead took the opportunity to reduce the gap at the top to 13 points. Liam Burns (81) and Paul Yates (69) added 151 for the first wicket at Cartmel which enabled a declaration on 226/4. Bob Davies (46) and Tom Harvey (34) got Cartmel to 89/1, but Mike Mead (5/41) induced a collapse as Cartmel were dismissed for 137. Ambleside’s game against Carnforth 2nds was also rained off, but the Lakesiders are in third place, a whopping 47 points behind Shireshead. Charlie Nicholls (47), Louis Bigland (39) and Hennie Kruger (31) were in the runs as Netherfield 3rds racked up 176/9 in 30 overs at Ingleton, Graham Kellett taking 4/39. Kellett made 35 as Ingleton replied with 85/5, missing out on the 50% necessary for the bottom side to secure even a point in the draw.

Impressive spells from Phil Mason (2/15) and Jon Mason (5/33) who seemed to have the ball on a string, removed Sedgwick 2nds upper order and it needed a maiden fifty from Matty McVey (57) with support from Dan Noar (23) to get them to 119. Silverdale won by 9 wickets with teenager Harry Mason (62 not out) making his maiden fifty in senior cricket. Richard Ivison (33) and Mike Burton (31) were in form for Coniston at Westgate, but the second spell from Ryan McMenamin (4/34) constrained them to 138/9. Westgate 2nds won by 7 wickets with Chris Carter (55 not out) making a welcome return to form.

Division 3 leaders Heysham 2nds scored 153/7 against Bolton le Sands before bowling out Sands for 103 to win by 50 runs. Harry Wallbank (29) top scored whilst Sam Gates took 3/29 and Andy Carruthers 3/36. Ben Roche (53) and James Bousefield (23) put Sands in a good position, but their middle and lower order collapsed against Chris Boniface (4/18) and Aiden Yates (2/7). Morecambe 3rds are in second place after Alex Hill (6/21) and Mark Armistead (4/8) dismissed Arnside 2nds for 30. Armistead has now taken 35 wickets at 4.31 for Morecambe who cantered to an 8 wicket win. Gareth Johnson took 4/12 including a hat trick as Trimpell restricted Leven Valley to 89, Ian Semple chipping in with 3/14. Mark Huddleston made 46 as Trimpell win by 8 wickets. The other games in Division 3 were rained off.

Burneside 2nds went back to the top of Division 4 as Mark Ward (80 from 106 balls) and Mark Kelsall (68 from 84 balls) added 124 for the first wicket allowing Ward to declare on 182/2 before Joe Sorrenson (4/13) and Calum McKenzie (3/21) bowled out Coniston 2nds for 46. Bare 2nds are in second place. Dave Sudell (42 not out) top scored in 142/5 declared but they couldn’t bowl out Sedgwick 3rds as Steve Foxcroft scored 30 in 108/6. Jonty Collinson (56) and Nick Passenger (60) were in the runs as Shireshead 3rds compiled 183/8, Oliver Williams taking 3/45 for Ulverston 3rds replied with 141/5 in a rain affected draw, Williams (30) and Jonah Lowes (34) securing the equal share of the points. Kirkby Lonsdale 2nds bowled out Westgate 3rds for 81, but were dismissed in turn for 28 whilst rain ruined the game between Netherfield 4ths and Ingleton 2nds.

Sunday sees finals day in the Kendal Sports Trophies competition. Arnside 2nds play Morecambe 3rds and Carnforth 3rds take on Leven Valley at Warton Cricket Club from 1030 am.
