Week 16 review and a look forward to match day 17

By Tim Mansfield

Last week’s review and a look forward to key games in league and cup this week

Heysham face one of their biggest tests when Shireshead who have had the better of their recent encounters visit Carr Lane on Saturday. Westgate will expect to beat Kendal 2nds and will close the gap if Shireshead can avoid defeat.

In Division 2 Holme can virtually confirm the championship if they beat second placed Shireshead 2nds in a repeat of the British Rose Cricket final. Windermere and Netherfield 3rds play two games this weekend and have the chance to gallop up the table.

Bolton le Sands have registered former player Mark Clarkson and will be hoping he can inspire his native club to a win against Silverdale 2nds, whilst Division 3 leaders, Heysham have the chance to revenge their cup elimination at the hands of Carnforth.

Arnside hosts the Division 4 Moon & Coxhill Finals day on Sunday. On league form, Ingleton 2nds are the underdogs but don’t write off Chris Chappell’s men. Look out for the Dukes brothers. Sedgwick have picked a mix of experience and youth and their captain met Ian Botham this week for tips ahead of the big game. Chris Norman is a big match player and is a dangerous batter as well as a bowler Hrishi Desai can rely on for 4 tight overs. Burneside are well led by Mark Ward who at this level is a dangerous all-rounder and he forms a formidable opening partnership with Jordan Wilkinson. Phil Hartley formerly of Netherfield brings quality to their bowling attack. Morecambe have experience in Michael Fisher, but their stars have been Dinesh Annadurai and Surenthar Nedunchelian.

Last week’s results and roundup

After 36 hours of continuous rain that had seen no play in the Westmorland League on Saturday, the groundstaff of Warton CC’s prodigious efforts saw play at the Kendal Sports Trophies finals day start only half an hour later than planned on Sunday. Whilst the nation celebrated the win of the Lionesses, Kev Demain led well his mix of callow cubs and veterans with grizzled experience as Morecambe 3rd XI prevailed. In the semifinal Morecambe scored 137/5 from 16 overs with Demain (44) top scoring. This proved too difficult for Arnside 2nds who replied with 81. The second semifinal produced an exciting finish. Carnforth 3rds had posted 136/9 from 20 overs, Sam Lister (26) providing the early impetus, whilst Reuben Bragg (25) was the finisher. Matt Butel took 3/20 for Leven Valley who went on to win from the penultimate ball thanks to former professional Tony Johnson (56 not out from 46 balls) and Kyle Hinds (33 not out from 27 balls) after Graham Wilson (2/9) had pegged them back. In the final, played in glorious sunshine, Morecambe scored 154/2 with Demain making 30 and man of the match Oli Battersby scoring 62 not out. It proved too much for Leven Valley who finished their 20 overs, 56 runs short.

In Division 3, Milnthorpe 2nds beat Galgate by 7 wickets. Bare 2nds are top of Division 4 after 111 run win against Ingleton 2nds. Alan Regan (30) and Liam Burrow (50) provided the platform for Gareth Westworth (72) to dominate the bowling, despite good bowling from Joe Wilson (5/53) and Ben Lawson (3/28). Robert Hoggarth made 25, but 195 was too many as Lauren Burgess (4/23) and Burrow (3/16) bowled out the Yorkshiremen. Rowen Yates (3/2), Malcolm Taylor (3/27), Thomas Atkinson (2/7) and Stan Collinson (2/7) combined for Shireshead 3rds to bowl out Sedgwick 3rds for 47 and their batters completed an 8 wicket win. Surenthar Nedunchelian (31) was the main scorer as Morecambe 4ths scored 119/9 in a game reduced to 25 overs. Steve Gosling took 3/26 for Coniston who replied with 77/7 as Saquib Ghumman (3/8) achieved a personal best. Jonny Lowes (60 not out) was in form for Ulverston 3rds and with Oliver Williams (30) he took them to 199/4 which Kirkby Lonsdale did their best to chase down finishing on 183/9. Westgate 3rds beat Netherfield 4ths by 10 wickets after restricting them to 91/9.

On Sunday Arnside CC will host the Moon & Coxhill Trophy finals day. Sedgwick 1sts and 2nds have fallen at the semi final stage and their 3rd team will be looking to do better when they play Ingleton 2nds in the first game at 1030. The second semifinal at 2pm will see Burneside 2nds play Morecambe 4ths as both clubs will be looking for a WCL cup double, with the final following at 5.30pm.
