Week 4 Review

Sedgwick remain top of the table despite only managing a winning draw at Kirkby Lonsdale. Aaron Lomas (28), Ali Howell (28) and Chris Evans (36) took them to 150, with James Royce bowling an excellent spell of off-spin to take 6/34. Steve Williams (53 not out) batted to secure the draw with support from Ben Ferguson (20) as Sedgwick tried 8 bowlers. Arnside are only 3 points behind in second place after beating Warton who made 159/6, Stuart Mayor making 43 and Jack Bolton a career best 73 not out, Rob Shepherd taking 3/28. 159 proved not enough as Jason Bingley (60 not out) and Alex Davidson (66 not out) added 88 for the third wicket. Three points behind are Westgate who triumphed in a low scoring game against Burneside. Westgate were indebted to Phil Harvey (23) to be able to make 72 as Oscar Coxon (3/19), Ben Leacock (3/23) and Ethan Elwood (3/15) ran through the home side. Only the opener Simon Huck (21) and last man Coxon (13) made double figures as Dylan Conroy ran amok taking 6/7 in 8.1 overs. With support from Zak Buchanan (3/20) they dismissed Burneside for 44. Westgate visit Sedgwick on Saturday and with a game in hand will be eyeing the league summit.

Oli Kilner scored 102 not out from 107 balls as Kendal 2nds continued their unbeaten start. Former professional Terry Hunte made 35 as Kendal totalled 185/4. Bare were not helped by run outs as Andy Dugdale took 4/18. John Hughes (28) top scored in 83 all out. Heysham put last week’s defeat behind them beating Milnthorpe comprehensively by 8 wickets. Sam Calverley (3/13) and Jamie Cassidy (4/27) did the damage as bottom side Milnthorpe were all out for 74. Lewis Plackett (40 not out) took Heysham to victory in 21 overs. Trimpell gained their first win of the season, beating Sedbergh School 2nds by 5 wickets. Veteran Steve Beniston had his first bowl of the season and took 5/16 as supported by Gaurang Agrawal (3/31) the school team were bowled out for 101, only Tom Newman (51) having the answers on a slow track. Paul Thompson (35) and Michael Bland (40 not out) sealed the win.

Division 2 leaders Holme scored 239/6 at home to Windermere with the Herron brothers, Brendan and Richard scoring 86 and 87 not out respectively. Morgan Henderson (30) and Zach Gillespie (47) added 59 for the first wicket and that was the foundation for them batting out for the draw on 152/8. Coniston are on their heels with an impressive 9 wicket win against Westgate 2nds. Jacob Vaughan (56 not out) and Steven Creed (54) were the only real contributors as Westgate scored 140, Sam Eccles taking 3/27. Richard Ivison then made a magnificent 90 not out from 82 balls. 11 fours and 6 sixes suggest the former Millom man doesn’t like running. Paul Yates (46) anchored the innings for Shireshead 2nds before Adam Coates (35 not out from 21 balls) and Aiden Weir (27 not out from 19 balls) added 50 in the last 5 overs for a total of 172/5. Will Anderson (22), Joe Cowperthwaite (28) and Tom Harvey (29) kept Cartmel in the hunt, but spinners Mike Mead (4/27) and Rob Jacques (4/35) took the wickets as Cartmel fell short by 20 runs.

Unselfishly Adam Hornby declared when he was on 159 not out from 114 balls (15 fours, 10 sixes). With 8 overs remaining he had a chance of the league record, but preferred to go for the win against Ambleside. Carnforth 2nds totalled 263/3 with Louis Rogerson (41) and Glenn Russell (43) also in the runs. Hornby’s efforts were in vain as Joe Browning (33) and Hugh Tyson (32 not out) secured the draw as Ambleside finished on 178/7. Mike Robinson (57) and Paul Salmon (40) shared an opening stand that enabled Netherfield 3rds to post 151/9 against Ingleton who replied with 127/7, Matthew France top scoring with 39. Toby Cross took an impressive 3/6 from his 10 overs. Jon Mason (54 not out) batted through the Silverdale innings and with Ali James hitting 6 sixes in his 65 and Rob Letcher (35) the visitors scored 188/5. Adam Kershaw made 47 as Sedgwick 2nds salvaged a draw with 128/6.

Only 3 points separate Milnthorpe 2nds, Morecambe 3rds and Heysham 2nds at the top of Division 3. Experienced bowlers Bob Baldwin (4/2) and Andy Thomas (4/23) dismissed Holme 2nds for 48, Mike Halhead making 24 not out. Gavin Kellett (22 not out) and Simon Murphy (21 not out) completed the 7 wicket win. Kevin Demain (54) and Damian Gudgeon (66 not out) led Morecambe to 182/3 which was too much for Arnside 2nds who were all out for 44, despite Chris Till performing the rare feat of carrying his bat for 16. Mark Armistead took 5/10. 3/14 from Heysham’s Jack Rawlings helped restrict Bolton le Sands to 90/8, John Carter making 32 and Mark Brickles a patient 31 not out. All the Heysham batsmen chipped in, with Richard Townsend (20) Harry Wallbank (16 not out) and James Hesketh (17 not out) completing the win. The impressive young Jack Brown took 3/7.

In form Mark Huddelston made 52 and Danny Halstead 71 as Trimpell 2nds scored 178/8 at Leven Valley, George Needham took 3/26 and Martyn Weaver 3/38 for the home side. Halstead took 4/8 in a fine all round performance, but Leven Valley dug deep and achieved a draw finishing on 48/7. James Alker (38) and David Hones (23) were the main contributors in Silverdale 2nds 130 all out, Thamjid Nalakath (3/21) and Eve Thomas (3/14) taking the wickets for Kendal 3rds who replied with 117 with Mahammed Kaithara making 45 not out, but Alfie Moffatt with 5/19 and Alker (1/17) took the wickets in a match played in the best spirits and with outstanding sportsmanship from the Silverdale team. Rob Speak (34) and Dave Morgan (21) top scored for Galgate, but their 106 was never going to be enough against Carnforth 3rds. Sam Tomlinson made 37 not out as the target was reached in double quick time, Zach Dodds making 26 not out. Gary Baxendale took 3/28 and Daniel Butterfield 3/13 for Carnforth.

3/7 from the promising Oliver Sanday saw Sedgwick 3rds bowl out Bare 2nds for 80. Hrishi Desai (30) and Richard Haddath (26 not out) overcame an initial scare to win by 5 wickets. Liam Burrow took 3/19. Burneside 2nds beat Coniston 2nds by 112 runs as Coniston were all out for 15. Mark Ward made 32 for Burneside and Paul Gosling took 4/26 and Rob Muir 3/23 for Coniston, but Coniston had no answer to Phil Hartley’s devastating 5/7. Chris Chappell 3/11) and Ben Melton (3/19) restricted Netherfield 4ths to 92/8, D Jackson making 37 not out. Jeremy Duke (41 not out) and Thomas Duke (27 not out) knocked off the runs in the 25th over. Surenthar Nedunchelain (48), Dineshmanickam Annadurai (57) and Arunraja Chidambaram (48) were in the runs for Morecambe 4ths against Sedbergh School 3rd XI. Felix Foster took 3/31 for the school, but they could only make 140 in reply largely thanks to a 9th wicket stand between Dexter Coad (32 not out) and Oliver Sayer (32). Chidambaram took 3/17 and Archie Graves 3/26. Rashid Ahmad (33) and Jonny Lowes (59 not out) helped Ulverston 3rds to 176/7 against Shireshead 3rds whose off spinner Alan Moulsdale took 4/31. David Sloan (45) and Thomas Atkinson (65) added 92 but after they were out, Shireshead batted out for the draw. Harry Preston took 3/12. Kirkby Lonsdale made 179/5 which was enough to achieve a winning draw against Westgate 3rds who replied with 145/9.

In the Hackney & Leigh Trophy there were wins for Burneside, Kendal 2nds and Warton against Sedgwick, Kirkby Lonsdale and Trimpell respectively. The game between Heysham and Bare was washed out and will be re-arranged. In the National Village Knockout Shireshead lost to Lindal Moor and Milnthorpe lost to Wrea Green whilst Sedgwick pushed Liverpool Comp Division 1 side Ainsdale close, losing by only 2 runs.
