Ellwood scores 56 as Burneside book place in Hackney & Leigh Final

Ethan Ellwood scored 56 as Burneside booked their place in the final of the Hackney & Leigh Trophy with a 27-run win over Sedgwick.

Burneside batted first after winning the toss and scored 152-9 from their 20 overs. Tom Ridley (3-15) took the most wickets for Sedgwick.

In response Sedgwick were all out for 125.

Sedgwick had a bright start to the game, as Jonny Matthews (1-30) and Richard Hanson (2-33) claimed the key wickets of Jack Thwaites (0) and Ben Philips (3) in the first two overs.

Ellwood accelerated Burneside’s recovery, hitting Hanson for four fours in the fourth over to take the total to 29-2.

At the end of the powerplay, Sedgwick found themselves 49-2, with Lewis Richardson on 17 and Ellwood on 25.

Their partnership of 57 runs was broken in the eighth over when Lewis Richardson was out bowled by Chris Evans for 24.

The next three wickets went for 25 runs with Ben Leacock (2), Simon Huck (0) and Dan Greenwood (2) all falling victim to Ridley’s bowling.

It was Ellwood that was the mainstay in the innings and he reached his fifty in the 11th over, but later went stumped by Mike Bracken off the bowling of Matthew McVey for 56 in the 14th over.

Jordan Wilkinson was next to depart, caught by Robbie Tattersall off McVey’s bowling in the 16th over.

Nathan Chambers and Curtis Nicholson put on a crucial partnership of 27 to take the score to 136-9, and this was continued after Nicholson was dismissed with Chambers hitting to all parts and scoring 31 not out.

Sedgwick started their innings slightly better than Burneside, but the first wicket fell in the third over when Tom Willacy was bowled by Oscar Coxon for 5 – leaving Sedgwick 17-1.

Aaron Lomas soon followed, out bowled by captain Leacock for 14.

At the end of the powerplay, Sedgwick were 34-2 with Ali Howell on four and Robbie Tattersall on 9.

Robbie Tattersall was next to fall, caught off the bowling of Richardson with Matthews’ side on 50-3.

A flurry of wickets followed with Evans (3) out caught by Nicholson, Ali Howell run out for 19 and Lee Tattersall out caught and bowled. This took the score to 67-6.

Ridley and Bracken put on 27 for the seventh wicket, before the former was caught in the deep by Wilkinson off the bowling of Chambers for 11, leaving Sedgwick at 94-7.

Hanson was out bowled for four, taking the score to 110-8 and McVey followed when he hit the ball onto his stumps off the bowling of Nicholson for two.

Sedgwick finished their innings all out for 125 when Bracken was caught by Thwaites off the bowling of Leacock for 19.
