Heysham beat Sedgwick to extend lead

By Tim Mansfield

If they beat Shireshead on Saturday they will have gone through the first half of the season unbeaten as they push for a first title since 1961

Heysham are 24 points clear in Division 1 after a 5 wicket win at home to Sedgwick. Asked to bat first the visitors were given a good start by Richard Hanson (29) in an unaccustomed opener’s position, but they lost their way against Heysham’s quartet of Sam Calverley (2/41), Jamie Cassidy (3/52), Graeme Cassidy (3/20) and Riley Wilson (2/18). 92/8 however became a more respectable 138 thanks to veteran Jason Dalzell (38 not out). Heysham slipped to 56/3, but Sam Calverley hit a quick 42 to being the game to an early conclusion. Next up for Heysham is Shireshead who bowled out Morecambe 2nds for 130 with Ben Dobson (39) showing his promise in an innings that kept the visitors in the game. Dave Jack took 4/29 and Joe Oliver 4/16, but Shireshead lost wickets regularly to Michael Bland (3/33) and Gullam Maje (3/16) and it took Joe Oliver (37) and his father, Phil (23 not out) to squeak over the line in a 1 wicket win.

Burneside are 7 points ahead of Shireshead in second place after a 4 wicket win against Holme. Lee Barnes (41) and Robin Adams (37) lead a recovery after Ben Phillips (5/23) had put Holme in trouble. 139/9 was better than nothing, but Phillips (32) and David Batty (32 not out) took them to a 4 wicket win. Joel Bibby took 3/34 and Barnes 3/41. Warton’s good season continued with a 7 wicket win at Kendal. Paul Simpson (4/29) and Graeme Crowther (3/27) reduced Kendal 2nds to 11/4, but Shane Hyland (56) and Matt Park (49) added 91 for the 5th wicket. Despite their efforts 147/9 seemed below par and it proved to be as Jack Bolton (36 not out) and Bradley Gosling (40 not out) made an unbroken 61.

Bare have strengthened their team by making links with the University, and it was Ryan Anbampola (4/22) who led them to bowl out Carnforth 2nds for 126, Louis Potter (29) top scoring. Josh Allison (33) and Anbampola (28 not out) completed a 5 wicket win. A mention must be given to young seamer Alfie Hill who took 4/15 from 12 overs in the Bare innings. James Royce (31) and Steve Williams (44) were the man forces in Kirkby Lonsdale scoring 170 at Arnside for whom Jim Crawford took 3/24 and Rob Shepherd 3/37. Alex Davidson (49) and Adam Richardson (63 not out) made short work of the chase. Richardson has now made 576 runs this season at a Bradmanesque average of 115.2. No batsman has ever made 1000 league runs in a season in Division 1, and the Arnside captain who earlier this season passed 15,000 career runs for the club must have a good chance of the record.

Coniston is a tough place to go and win, but it held little fear for Shireshead’s outstanding teenager Stan Collinson who made a brilliant 106 not out from 88 balls (14 fours and 3 sixes) as leaders Shireshead 2nds pulled clear in Division 2. Tom Brown (32) helped them gain a 7 wicket win. Earlier Coniston had scored 158 with Mike Burton (45) retaining his good form, but medium pacers, Gareth Bleasdale (3/25) and Paul Yates (3/41) kept the innings in check. Silverdale are 5 points behind after an exciting game with Ambleside. Batting first, Jon Mason (31) and Harry Mason (44) provided a firm foundation which none of the later batsmen could really capitalise on as Alex Brown (6/45) and Barney Wileman (4/26) took wickets regularly bowling them out for 174 in the 44th over. Ben McGregor (48) and Hugh Tyson (68 not out) began watchfully against Phil Mason (1/41) and Jon Mason (2/19) who beat the bat regularly, but had put the visitors on top when McGregor was run out. Tyson assumed the lead role and the penultimate over began with 8 needed and 4 wickets in hand. Paul Moffatt (0/30) bowled a maiden, the only run conceded being a leg bye. Steve Beck was entrusted with the final over and held his nerve as 3 were needed from the final ball for an Ambleside win. One was scampered, but a brilliant direct throw from Harry Mason ran out James Greenwood (17). 10 points to Silverdale and 7 to Ambleside in a thrilling draw.

After a difficult start, Milnthorpe are rising up the table winning 6 games on the bounce. They play Silverdale on Saturday in what should be an interesting game. This week Scott Singleton (4/21) and Andy Cormack (4/13) bowled out Sedbergh School 2nds for 80 and Gavin Kellett (48 not out) sealed a 9 wicket win. Marcus Palamountain (5/24) achieved his best figures for the second team as Cartmel were bowled out for 109. Joel Frith (42), David Hannigan (29 not out) and Chris Carter (30 not out) finished off a 8 wicket win for Westgate 2nds. Netherfield 3rds scored 248/4 to beat Morecambe 3rds with Taylor Backhouse making 101 not out, with support from Paul Salmon (46) and Mike Robinson (35) Kevin Demain (50) and Lawrence Ramakannu (57) had scored fifties for Morecambe, and Jamie Ulyatt 44. Harry Smith took 3/57 and Steve Wilson 3/35. Harry Wallbank made 41 not out for Heysham 2nds, but Adam Kershaw (3/24), Will Richards (3/39) and Ben Harvey (3/30) bowled them out for 117. An imperious 61 not out by Matthew Bailey took Sedgwick 2nds to an 8 wicket win.

3rd division leaders’ Ingleton bowled out Bare 2nds for 42 with Josh Capstick (5/22) and Matthew France (4/0) to the fore. Mark Hughes made 38 not out in a 10 wicket win. The other relegated side Windermere have been inconsistent, but to the cost of Silverdale 2nds, Saturday was a day on which they were good. Jack Belcher (59 not out) carried his bat and skipper Gary Entwistle (50) was in form, but Dan Sykes (4/27) and Will Aspinwall (3/19) restricted the visitors to 141. Morgan Henderson made a career best 69 as Windermere won by 5 wickets. Holme 2nds scored 199/6 with Pat Cantley (85) and Ryan Teasdale (69) but Burneside 2nds beat them by 8 wickets, with 76 not out from Jack Thwaites and 61 from Mark Kelsall. Kyle Hinds (104 not out) whose CV includes Roe Green in the Greater Manchester Cricket League hit his second ton of the season. He added 139 with Luke Deveney (42) before Tony Johnson (33) provided the icing. Leven Valley finished on 230/5 which proved far too many for Bolton le Sands who were 55 all out, George Needham taking 5/12.

Mark Baldwin (128 not out) made a career best adding 121 for the second wicket with Paul Thompson (54). Baldwin hit 17 fours and 4 sixes. With Sam Freear (43 not out) Trimpell declared on 240/3 from 35 overs. Danny Halstead took 4/17 as Arnside 2nds were 100 all out. Experienced duo Wayne Tomlinson (44) and James Thornton (54) took Carnforth 3rds to 202/9 at Galgate who were 68/2 when the rain arrived. Asif Mansoor took 4/58 for Galgate and Matt Cooper scored 34.

In Division 4 North Ryan Nightingale (62), Shaun Mason (34) and Ross Swidenbank (30 not out) took Kendal 3rds to 234/7 but an obdurate Coniston 2nds led by Andrew Townsley (27 not out from 84 balls) denied them an outright win finishing on 120/6 after Trent Knowles (3/14) had removed the top order. It is thought that no female player has yet made a fifty in the WCL. On Sunday Georgina Brown got close scoring 47 not out for Ingleton 2nds. With 58 not out from Mark Hughes they scored 147/7 which Ulverston 3rds passed for five, with John Dilkes (32), Oliver Williams (30) and Partha Singh (41 not out) contributing after James Lawson took 4/25. Oliver Hall (4/10) bowled out Appleby Eden 3rds for 103, Anthony Errington making 33. Burneside 3rds needed 44 not out from number 9 Siraaz Patel to gain a 3 wicket win. Piers Sweeney took 3/21 for Appleby Eden.

In Division 4 South leaders Shireshead 3rds were denied victory by the storm. They had bowled out Sedgwick 3rds for 105 with only Liam Hogan (25) and Brad Brentnall (31) in double figures, with Rowan Yates (3/13) taking his tally to 24 wickets at 7.5 each, a decent record in a season where the bat is dominating. Jack Heys made 33 and despite 5/23 from Freddie Ashcroft, Shireshead only needed 6 when the rain arrived. Morecambe’s Jake Rigby hit 18 fours and 6 sixes in making a career best 159 not out. The fifteen year olds efforts, with Mark Routledge (31) and a maiden fifty for Ethan Packard allowed Morecambe 4ths to declare on 272/2. Callum Little counterattacked for Kirkby Lonsdale 2nds scoring 81 (11 fours, 3 sixes). Miram Alam took 3/30 as Kirkby were all out for 149. Matthew Bradshaw scored a personal best 44 as Westgate 3rds scored 144/7 against Sedbergh School 3rds. Jamie Taylor (73 not out) and Alister Paul (39) gave the school side a 4 wicket win. Oliver Toulmin (34) was top scorer for Heysham 3rds in their 127. Mohammed Kaithara took 5/41 for Milnthorpe 2nds who were all out in reply for 98, David Whitaker taking 3/20.

In the British Rose Cricket Cup, Cartmel who won the competition in 2019 reached Finals Day beating Sedgwick 2nds. Windermere beat Leven Valley to reach finals day in the Kendal Sports Trophies Cup. Kirkby Lonsdale 2nds beat Sedgwick 3rds to reach the quarter-finals of the Moon & Coxhill Cup.

Shireshead had an outstanding win on Sunday to reach the last 16 of the National Village Knockout beating Sacriston Colliery from the North-East Durham Premier League by 24 runs. Ernie Collinson scored a superb 74 from 88 balls, with 50 runs coming in boundaries. With good support from Tom Jacques (38) and Joe Oliver (40) Shireshead finished on 223/8. Sacriston were undaunted as after all they had scored more than 300 against Sunderland the previous day. A tight spell from Collinson (1/25) kept them in check and with wickets for Dave Jack (3/46), Jake Agar (3/26) and Jack Cunnington (2/38) it is Shireshead who face Liverpool Competition side Ainsdale at home in the next round with the dream of a Lord’s final only three games away.
