The top four win, but will the weather intervene today?

DLS may well need to be used to reset targets today in Divisions 1 and 2, unless the forecast rain doesn't arrive or it is such a deluge that play can't be resumed.

It will be a shame if games are ruined because there are some intriguing fixtures. Warton miss Tom Barnfield, but will hope to test the mettle of leaders Heysham at Carr Lane, Kendal 2nds have strengthened and will challenge Sedgwick whilst Carnforth 2nds and Kirkby Lonsdale is an important game for both clubs.

It’s very much as you were at the top of the Westmorland League as the top four teams won on Saturday. Phil Bovis (44) and Sam Calverley (48) shared a stand of 68 that set Bare a target of 197. Frank Smith scored 38 as bare reached 66/1, but once Smith went they lost their last 7 wickets for 6 runs to Riley Wilson (3/23) and Sam McClements (4/2). Ethan Ellwood (112) scored his second career hundred in Burneside’s win against Carnforth and in the process passed 500 runs for the season having now made 536 at an average of 48.73. Mark Ward (36) and Ryan Shepherd (40) took the score to 216/7. Alfie Hill (3/42) bowled well for Carnforth 2nds, who made 127 in reply, Louis Rogerson (50) scoring his maiden fifty. Ben Leacock took 4/20 and Ellwood 3/28.

Adam Richardson (56) again showed his class, but Arnside’s 134 was below par. Jake Agar took 3/18 for Shireshead and Jack Cunnington 4/26. Tom Jacques (44) and Joe Cunliffe (58 not out) took Shireshead to a 7 wicket win. Lee Barnes (42) was the main scorer in Holme’s 112. Jonny Matthews (3/16) and Jason Dalzell (3/20) took out the middle and late orders as Holme slipped from 73/4. Barnes took 4/12 but Oli Sanday (30 not out) demonstrated maturity beyond his years to guide Sedgwick to a 4 wicket win from a potentially parlous 76/6.

Warton are in fifth after a 97 run win against Morecambe 2nds. Graham Kellett (53) scored his fourth fifty of the season and with Tom Barnfield (40) sharing a number of partnerships, Warton posted 166. Ben Dobson took 3/25 for Morecambe whose reply never got going as Graeme Crowther bowled a brilliant opening spell taking 6/23, only James Lambert (28) making any sort of score in 69 all out. Kendal 2nds are out of the bottom two with a winning draw against bottom side Kirkby Lonsdale. Paul Dodds (25) and Darren Nightingale (66) added 86 for the first wicket, but thereafter Sam Fletcher (33) as Andrew Metcalfe (4/28) and the bowlers held sway. Mark Beaumont (56) scored his first fifty of the season, but needed more support to press for victory, but the last pair held firm for 6 overs. Matt Park took 3/32 for Kendal.

Shireshead 2nds beat Ambleside by 81 runs to remain top of Division 2. Simon Gould made a whirlwind 82 from 54 balls and Stan Collinson (34) and Tom Brown (30) built on this enabling a declaration on 209/7. Paul Johnson took 5/31 for Ambleside and then made 48 not out in their 128, Mike Mead returning 5/28 and Paul Yates 3/11. Fifties from Ali James (50) and Jonty Moeckell (51 not out) underpinned second place Silverdale’s 192/8. Joe Atkinson took 3/39 for Cartmel, but only Joe Cowperthwaite (28) made double figures in 55 all out as Steve Beck took 4/3. Liam Burrow’s 103 gave Morecambe 3rds an outstanding 1 wicket win with one over to spare against Heysham 2nds. Jamie Antcliffe had scored 88 in Heysham’s 225/6. Steve Bowman made 55 not out batting through Milnthorpe’s innings of 43 overs and with Mike Wills (33 not out) taking them to 109/2 in difficult batting conditions. Mike Halhead (42) and Ryan Teasdale (31) were the main scorers in Holme 2nds. James Wright took 5/28 for Silverdale 2nds, but Halhead’s 4/12 bowled out Silverdale for 95. Andy Foster (3/4) and George Needham (3/16) bowled out Bare 2nds for 84. Luke Deveney made 43 not out as Leven Valley won by 9 wickets. Ed Hart (56) and Mike Dickinson (41) took Arnside 2nds to 108/3 when the rain came at Windermere.

Georgina Brown scored 56 not out for Ingleton 2nds, it is believed that she is the first female player to score a fifty in the Westmorland League, a great achievement. Matt Young added 41 in 147/6. Zak Forrester took 3/27 for Appleby Eden 3rds who went on to win by 3 wickets thanks to Oliver Wilkinson (40) and Adam Knowles (40) despite Brown taking 3/23 to cap an outstanding all round performance.
