Tony Jones is awarded Life Membership of the WCL

By Tim Mansfield

Peter Wilson made the award in the tea interval of the game at Warton yesterday.

Peter said that "One of the privileges of being president of the League is to award Life Membership to individuals for outstanding service to the League and to cricket in our area. No one is more deserving of this honour than Tony Jones. Tony was what they called a nuggety all rounder for Warton, apparently never short of a word. On retirement, he quickly became one of the most respected umpires we’ve ever had, a supporter and helper of new umpires and someone who teams looked forward to him officiating their games. Tony served on the League Management Committee for many years and was a voice of common sense, with the interests of cricket and our clubs always foremost. It is fitting to recognise Tony’s immense contribution with this award."
