Heysham host Carnforth 2nds whilst Bare go to Burneside

Leaders Heysham face Carnforth 2nds who they beat by a solitary run in the Hackney and Leigh Trophy recently. After a difficult start, Carnforth with their young players to the fore have found their feet in Division 1. However first team call ups, including for skipper Adam Hornby, mean that they will do well to take points off Heysham. Similarly Bare are reporting absentees ahead of their trip to second place Burneside, who are close to full strength. Sedgwick go to Warton, Shireshead to Kirkby Lonsdale while Holme v Morecambe 2nds has the feel of an important game for two teams in the lower reaches of the table.

On Sunday, high flying Palace Shield side Euxton will enjoy the splendid surroundings of Sedgwick House in the Meyler Cup, and Heysham entertain Great Eccleston.

Last week, The Division 1 leading bowler so far this season, Sam Calverley took his third 5 wicket haul to bowl out Kendal 2nds for 102 and now has 26 league wickets at 5.08 each. Terry Hunte (33) and Shane Hyland (54 not out) added 49, but no other batter made double figures. Heysham remain top of the table as Lewis Plackett (56) and Lee Calverley (48 not out) knocked off the runs within 17 overs. Second place Burneside gained their third 1 wicket win in a row. Nathan Chambers (3/15) and Ben Phillips (4/24) reduced Sedgwick to 56/7, but Chris Evans (30) and Tom Ridley (21) elevated the score to 114. For Sedgwick Jonny Matthews (5/33) took regular wickets, Steve Cooper (26) gave Burnside a foothold, but at 93/9 Sedgwick were favourites, but amazingly another Houdini act was to follow as Ben Leacock (16 not out) and Chambers (4 not out) scored the runs.

Shireshead remain in fourth place after a 2 wicket win at Warton. Graham Kellett (72 from 83 balls) and Tom Barnfield (97 from 102 balls) hit 27 fours between them in a partnership of 103, but no other batter made double figures as they finished on 197/9. Dave Jack took 4/38 and Jack Cunnington 3/48. Joe Cunliffe (42), Oliver Wilkinson (37 not out) and Jake Agar (46) just got them over the line, with the injured Matt Yates not needed to bat. Arnside captain, Adam Richardson (132) hit 8 sixes in making the first Division hundred of the season. He added 193 for the third wicket with Ben Lenton (87) as Arnside scored 248/6 against Morecambe 2nds at Woodhill Lane. His opposite number James Lambert (76) made a second fifty in succession and with veteran Gullam Maje (57 not out) Morecambe were able to gain a draw finishing on 215/9. Not content with his earlier efforts Richardson took 3/40.

Frank Smith (46) and Obdah Mohammed (57) were the main run scorers in Bare’s 185/6, James Royce taking 3/45 for Kirkby Lonsdale who were dismissed for 124 in reply giving Bare their second win in a row. Bare’s spinners Robbie White (5/17) and John Hughes (4/40) enjoyed the drier conditions. Carnforth 2nds also made it two wins on the bounce with the impressive 15-year-old Lewis Spurr (55) making his maiden Division 1 fifty, and Louis Potter (30) and Lee Hodkinson (59 not out) also in the runs as the home side compiled 220//6. After Alfie Hill (3/49) took two early wickets, Holme’s Liam Teasdale (82 not out) and Lee Barnes (54) added 81 to get them back in the game. Charlie Outterside (38) joined Teasdale in a stand of 78, but as they pushed for victory they lost 4 wickets for 13 runs and finished 5 short on 215/8.

In Division 2 joint leaders Shireshead 2nds were 28/5 at Ambleside chasing 170. Paul Yates (48 not out) dug in whilst Luke Bray made a carer best 94 not out from 101 balls, hitting 12 fours and 3 sixes as the pair added an unbroken 142. Jonny Mason (119 not out) scored the fourth hundred of his career and Ali James (87) added 174 with him for the third wicket as joint leaders Silverdale declared on 259/3 from 40 overs. Morecambe 3rds made 143 in reply, Oli Battersby scoring 43. Evergreen Paul Moffatt took 5/45 in a rare first team appearance whilst Phil Mason took 4/16.

Will Anderson (51) was in the runs for Cartmel who made 155/9 at Milnthorpe, Luke Baldwin taking 3/37. In his second League appearance of the season Steve Bowman (72 not out) and Mike Wills (31) got the home team close before a cameo from Darren Wills (323 not out) completed a 6 wicket win with 9 balls remaining. Robert Warne (45) and Mike Burton (80) were the main contributors as Coniston scored 169/8, Ben Harvey taking 4/39 for Sedgwick 2nds. Warne showed he is a supreme all-rounder keeping wicket for the first half of the Sedgwick innings before taking off his pads to bowl and taking 5/13 as the visitors collapsed to 113 all out. Heysham 2nds scored 141/9 and bowled out Netherfield 3rds for 56, with Jack Rawlings taking 6 wickets and Charlotte Whittaker, 3. Jeff Winder made 70 for Heysham before unfortunately breaking his nose.

Division 3 joint leaders Ingleton bowled out Arnside 2nds for 66, as their in-form bowlers Josh Capstick (4/24) and Luke Gorst (4/29) held sway. Gorst is the League’s wicket taker with 27. Ingleton reached their target inside 7 overs. A brilliant performance from young all rounder Myles Bowen (49) kept Carnforth 3rds equal at the top. George Vinall (3/36) and Denzil Henderson (4/19) dismissed them for 95, but in turn Windermere were all out for 77, Bowen taking 3/2 and Connor Dyson 3/13. Alex Yates (72) Pat Cantley (47) and Mike Halhead (46) took Holme 2nds to 201/4, but a masterly 131 not out from Paul Thompson and 57 not out from Mark Baldwin gave Trimpell a 9-wicket win.

Mattie Cooper (46 not out) and Usman Sheik (60 not out) took Galgate to 191/7, Freddie Burrows taking 3/52 and George Needham 3/33 for Leven Valley. Kyle Hinds (75) and Needham (32) got the Haverthwaite side in a good position, but Sheik took 5/32 as Galgate ran out winners by 13 runs. Mark Ward (118 not out) was another member of the Hundred Club as Burneside 2nds totalled 185/5 against Silverdale 2nds who had no answer to Mike Allen’s guile as the veteran spinner took 5/7. Sam Gates took 6/16 to bowl out Bare 2nds for 117, John Moller making 59 not out. Mark Brickles (51 not out) and James Bousefield (46) took Bolton le Sands to a 9-wicket win, their first of the season.

Oliver Longrigg took 5/19 for Appleby Eden 3rds as Stuart Walker made 34 in Coniston 2nds 81. Daniel Thomson made 40 not out in a 9-wicket win. Steve Watson (32) and Charlie Bentley (32) added 42 in Kendal 3rds’ 106. Rob Timms took 3/19 for Burnside 3rds. James Longley took 3/15 and Jack Barker scored 74 not out as Netherfield 4ths beat Ingleton 2nds by 9 wickets. Adam Coates (52) and Mark Heys (38 not out) helped Shireshead 3rds to 163/7 against Westgate 3rds for whom Charlie Higson took 3/13. James Main made a career best 33 as Westgate 3rds gained a draw on 131/5. Joe Jackson (31) and George Battersby (41) were the main men as Morecambe 4ths made 157. Dan Kavanagh took 3/13 and Thamjid Nalakath 3/39 for Milnthorpe 2nds who despite 55 from Nalakath and Andy Harmer (38) finished 11 short, Jake Rigby taking 4/17. Kirkby Lonsdale 2nds beat Heysham 3rds by 8 wickets.

There was a major shock in the Hackney and Leigh Trophy as holders Burneside lost at home to Holme. Joel Bibby (5/10) was on fire as the champions were reduced to 12/7 as Simon Shipperd chipped in with 3/10. Jordan Wilkinson (31), Barney Coxon (20) and Oscar Coxon (20) got them to 94. Charlie Outterside (25) and a pugnacious 25 not out from Ryan Teasdale gave Holme a 4 wicket win with 11 balls to spare. In the same competition Shieshead beat Warton by 7 wickets. Heysham were taken to the wire by Carnforth 2nds winning by just 1 run whilst in the British Rose Cricket Trophy Coniston beat Cartmel by 2 wickets with 4 balls to spare earning a home tie in the Quarter-finals as both teams progress to the next round. Westgate 2nds beat Silverdale by 10 wickets meaning that they and Morecambe 3rds will progress to the quarter-finals.
