Captain's knock ensures Burneside pick up first Hackney & Leigh Trophy win since 1998

By James Main

Burneside captain Ben Leacock led by example as he made 57 runs and took three wickets as his side won the Hackney & Leigh Trophy for the first time since 1998 at the weekend.

Leacock won the toss and elected to bat, and Burneside scored 131-9 before Westgate fell 15 runs short.

By the end of the powerplay, Westgate had taken four wickets and restricted Burneside to 40 runs. Jack Thwaites went thanks to an outstanding catch by youngster Joe Bradshaw at long on off the bowling of Dylan Conroy (2-22).

The other three Burneside batsmen to go were Ben Philips (9), Lewis Richardson (10) and the key wicket of Ethan Ellwood (5).

Westgate’s promising early start didn’t set the tone of the game however, as Leacock and Huck (9) put on a crucial partnership worth 40 runs for the fifth wicket before the latter was dismissed off the bowling of Dylan Conroy. This left Burneside 81-5 with seven overs left.

Jordan Wilkinson (7), Curtis Nicholson (3), Nathan Chambers (12) and Leacock were the final four wickets to fall as they were shared between Zak Buchanan (2-15), Jacob Vaughan (2-16) and Craig Buchanan (1-7).

Westgate had a decent start, putting on 17 for the first wicket, but Huntington departed just three overs in - bowled by Richardson (1-27).

The biggest partnership was between Craig Buchanan (38) and Sam Frith (20), with 26 runs scored between the pair before Frith was dismissed stumped by Dan aGreenwood off the bowling of Ellwood (1-16). This left the score at 48-2 at the end of the eighth over.

A promising start, but the run rate was reduced by some tight fielding by Burneside and some accurate bowling.

The next four wickets fell for just 22 runs, with Bradshaw (6), Andy Hill (7), Dylan Conroy (0) and Garry Tattersall (0) all dismissed – leaving Westgate in a sorry state at 65-6.

A partnership of 21 runs was brought up between Chris Carter (2) and Craig Buchanan, but Carter never seemed to be able to connect well with the ball before his dismissal caught and bowled by Nicholson (1-11).

Needing 27 to win from the final over a Burneside victory was looking likely, and their chances were boosted when Buchanan was out bowled by Chambers (1-19) in the first ball of the 20th over.

Jacob Vaughan (5*) and Sam Conroy (16*) were at the crease at the end as they fell 15 runs of the target.
